(TAP) - Calm was restored in Souk Lahad on Thursday afternoon after the deployment of national army units near public institutions and facilities in Souk Lahad (Kebili Governorate). The delegation, on Thursday, recorded clashes between protesters and police who intervened to disperse them by using tear gas. Classes were suspended, governor of Kebili Sami Ghabi said, adding that three demonstrators who were involved in acts of vandalism were arrested. Several young people in the delegation of Souk Lahad set fire to the headquarters of the delegation as well as to the official residence of the local delegate. Angry protesters also blocked the national road linking Kebili to Tozeur at the locality of Om Somaa to protest the "suspicious" death of two young people in the region who died in the sinking of their boat after a collision with a navy ship off the island of Kerkennah (governorate of Sfax) on Sunday. The protesters are calling for an investigation into the causes of the accident and visits by government officials to discuss ways to boost development in the region. |
