(TAP) - The social situation in the country and developments in civil service wage negotiations took centre stage as President of the Republic Béji Caid Essebsi received Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) Nourredine Tabboubi.

Caid Essebsi and Tabboubi urged the different stakeholders to fully shoulder their responsibilities so as to overcome the current crisis, reads a Presidency press release.

Tabboubi told the media at the end of the meeting he had informed the President of the Republic about the progress made in wage negotiations.

The progress made falls short of the aspirations of civil servants and "is far away from the target situation," he said. These negotiations reached "an extremely difficult" phase, he added.

"State institutions must assume their responsibility to find adequate solutions," Tabboubi emphasised. The Union is ready to engage in different forms of protest so as to defend this "just" cause.
