(TAP) - Minister of Youth and Sports Sonia Ben Sheikh kicked off, Wednesday in Krib delegation in Siliana, the registration operation for the social protection system "Ahmini".

The Minister stressed the importance of this programme, which aims to integrate 500,000 rural women into the social security system, particularly in light of rural women's exposure to accidents without health or welfare coverage.

She noted that "this programme was ordered by the Prime Minister after its adoption by the Cabinet meeting on Women held last March 8, marking the International Women's Day".

"Ahimni" members will receive health care cards for themselves and their families directly after registration, and will receive protection and coverage services," she said.

The Minister stated that "this project is part of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls (2017-2020) and is not the only programme that will promote the status of rural women in the agricultural sector".

Ben Sheikh added that the monthly cost of joining this system is 18 dinars, stressing its importance "especially since the life expectancy at birth indicator for Tunisian women has exceeded 75 years", noting that rural women working in the agricultural sector are over 75 years old and still working in this sector.

For her part, Faten Fatnassi, one of the founders of the programme, told TAP that "the system is a bridge between rural women and the welfare system, with the appointment of 274 representatives in 24 governorates to help rural women to register and pay the contribution".

The "Ahmini" system came into effect on Thursday, May 2, in order to broaden the membership base of the National Social Security Fund, particularly for women working in the agricultural sector who do not have social security coverage.

This system is based on electronic payment by mobile phone in order to simplify the registration of rural women in the social security system and to simplify their registration procedures.
