(TAP) - The Executive Committee of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) will meet again in two weeks to adopt the socio-economic programme of the trade union centre for the upcoming presidential and legislative elections, said Thursday, Noureddine Taboubi, UGTT Secretary-General.

In a statement to the media at the end of a meeting Thursday of the UGTT executive committee, Taboubi said that once the socio-economic programme of the UGTT is adopted, it will be submitted to all political parties, civil society components and all voters.

"However, the UGTT will not be involved in the elections and will rather exercise a power of suggestion through its socio-economic programme", he stressed, specifying that the UGTT's support to any candidate will not take into account the alignment to this programme, but will depend on the commitment to the ideals defended by the trade union centre.

For his part, the Deputy Secretary General of the UGTT, Bouali Mbarki, told the press that the socio-economic programme of the UGTT will be officially announced at the end of the next meeting of its Executive Committee. He considered that this programme constitutes "a project capable of overcoming all the problems that have undermined Tunisia for years".

"This programme is based on a set of major axes, including the fight against smuggling, the establishment of social justice and the promotion of the public health sector," he revealed, stressing that the UGTT has not yet deliberated on supporting one candidate at the expense of another.

The trade union leader confirmed that the trade union centre will not present electoral lists, but that the UGTT reserves the right to direct voters to candidates or political parties that share its socio-economic principles and choices.
