(TAP) - The national committee for the promotion of gender equality in the management of local affairs, on Wednesday, called on candidates in the 2019 presidential election to commit to uphold the principle of gender equality and combat gender discrimination, especially in the management of local affairs, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the Local Authorities Code and international conventions ratified by Tunisia.

The Committee considers that the participation of women in political, civil, economic, social and cultural life and in the fight against all forms of discrimination and violence against them is one of the prerogatives of the President of the Republic, as the protector of the constitution and the supreme representative of the state.

It recalls its commitment since 2014 to ensure the effective participation of women in political life, particularly at the local level, by guaranteeing equality, democratic citizenship and solidarity among all citizens.

The committee emphasises that building an egalitarian society hinges on increasing women's representation in all state structures at national and local levels.
