636 protests recorded in August 2019 (FTDES)

(TAP) - The month of August 2019 saw 636 protests (against 581 in the month of August 2018), 97% of them (621) were collective movements while the rest (15) are individual, namely suicides and attempted suicides, according to a report published by the Tunisian Social Observatory under the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES).

Lack of drinking water and poor management of water resources hit most of the country’s regions, particularly rural and remote areas, the report says.

According to the same report, Kairouan ranked first with 196 protests, followed by Nabeul (69), Sidi Bouzid (67), Gafsa and Sfax (43), Sousse (35), Tataouine (31) and Tunis (29).

15 acts of suicide and suicidal attempts were recorded in August 2019: 13 cases were committed by men and 2 by women. 2 cases of suicide and suicidal attempts were committed by people aged over 60 (a man and a woman) and 4 cases involved children under 20, the remaining cases included age groups ranging between 25 and 50 years old.

As far as violence is concerned, residential buildings as well as dwellings witnessed the highest rates of violence during the month of August 2019, the report reads.

Violence that took place in these areas accounted for 28.33%. 62% of them were collective violence while 38% were committed by individuals.

Public spaces ranked third (13.3%) followed by public transportation (6.7%). Workplaces and health places 5% rank next followed by tourism, educational and administrative facilities 3.33%.

Then came security and entertainment facilities with 1.7% of acts of violence.

Several regions in the country saw stabbing and murder acts in marriages due to disagreements between certain people attending the ceremony.

Violence committed by women represented only 3.33% against 95% by men while the rest was jointly committed by men and women.

Criminal violence was the largest form of violence recorded (55%), followed by relationship violence and social violence (about 8%). Domestic violence dropped by 3.3% compared to the previous months while violence related to protests and health remained the same.

The governorate of Tunis ranked first in terms of violence with 14.3% of all violence cases recorded in the month of August 2019, followed by the governorates of Kairouan (16.7%), Nabeul and Sousse (10%) and Monastir (8%).

The governorates of Mahdia, Sfax, Médenine, Gafsa, Ben Arous and Kasserine come next. No acts of violence were recorded in the governorates of de Kébili, Tozeur, Tataouine, Jendouba, Ariana, Manouba, Sidi Bouzid, Gabès, Kef and Siliana.
