(TAP)- Between 11 and 12 thousand new cases of cancer are recorded each year in Tunisia, announced Vice-President of the Tunisian Association of Medical Oncology (STOM) Amine Masmoudi.

In a statement to TAP on the fringes of the 5th STOM national congress organised in Tunis, Dr. Masmoudi described these figures as “alarming,” pointing out that the high rate of smoking, changing and sedentary lifestyles and food behaviour are behind these alarming figures.

He specified that the change in food habits which lack vegetable intakes has led in recent years to new cases of diabetes, obesity and endometrial cancer.

Dr. Masmoudi indicated that the improvement of the care given to patients requires the development of health care quality.

Taking the floor, STOM President Soumaya Labidi said that Tunisia counts today 150 oncologists.

The congress will discuss several current themes such as urological cancers, lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer, Dr. Labidi underlined, adding that workshops on anti-cancer drugs, molecular biology and paediatric oncology are also on the agenda of this two-day event.
