(TAP)- Acting Health Minister Sonia Ben Cheikh Wednesday, said regarding the imported contaminated wheat to Tunisia, the role of the ministry is restricted only to screening passengers at health checkpoints at land and sea borders as well as at airports so as to fight against the introduction of contagious diseases into the Tunisian territory.

During a working session held at the Ministry’s premises with the Select Committee on Administrative Reform, Good Governance, Fight Against Corruption and Monitoring of the Management of Public Funds at the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), the minister added that the control of cargoes of imported cereals is the prerogative of the relevant authorities in the Ministry of Agriculture, as it is the case for all other types of cargoes which are controlled by relevant ministries.

The Committee members stressed the need to assure citizens by verifying information especially when it is a public health issue.

Information was shared on social media about the import by a private company of wheat from Ukraine which is allegedly contaminated by nuclear radiation. The cargoes were unloaded at the commercial port of Sousse on August 2019. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this information is baseless.

The Ministry of Agriculture claimed that the shipment of wheat in question was from Bulgaria, "a member country of the European Union subject to European laws and provisions and not Ukraine, adding that the cargoes were unloaded at port of Sousse between August 29 and September 4, 2019.
