(TAP)– The Ministry of Social Affairs, on Thursday, signed a partnership agreement with the Tunisian Council for Refugees to improve the social services offered to refugees and asylum seekers in Tunisia.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Social Affairs Mohamed Trabelsi and President of the Tunisian Council for Refugees Mostafa Jammali.

The agreement provides for the creation of a joint committee including the ministry and the council, to determine the means of supporting the refugees and monitoring the centres hosting them, as well as updating data regulating their legal status.

Training sessions will also be organised in Tunisia and abroad, to support the capacities of the Ministry of Social Affairs in the field of supervision and raising awareness.

Mohamed Trabelsi considered that the agreement meets Tunisia's obligations with regard to the care for refugees and asylum seekers, stressing that the ministry grants great importance to cooperation with civil society organisations active in the field of refugees in Tunisia.

“Statistics indicate that the total number of asylum seekers and refugees in Tunisia has reached 3,117,” he said.

President of the Tunisian Council for Refugees Mostafa Jammali said that “asylum problems exist in Tunisia, as is the case with several countries in the world,” stressing that the council works in coordination with the High Commission for Refugees in Tunisia (UNHCR) to answer all questions relating to migration and asylum seekers and refugees in all regions of the country.

He indicated that asylum seekers and refugees in Tunisia are of different nationalities. “Immigrants from Syria are the first in number reaching 1,500, followed by different African nationalities,” he said.
