UGTT: Neighbourhood countries better placed to mediate to end despicable war in Libya

(TAP) - The executive bureau of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) has denounced foreign interference in Libya's internal affairs, warning against calls for war by some countries.

The national interest must be at the heart of Tunisia's foreign policy, the trade union organisation said in a statement released on Thursday.

A policy, the UGTT added, based on respect for the principles of fraternity and good neighbourliness and rejecting any compromise with suspicious international alliances whatever their motives.

"Neighbourhood countries are in a better position to mediate to end the despicable war in Libya," the organisation said, calling for coordination with these countries to find a solution to the Libyan crisis and end the fighting between Libyans.

The resolution of the Libyan conflict must be carried out by the Libyans themselves, far from any form of foreign interference that only serves their interests, the trade union centre stressed.

The executive bureau of the UGTT calls on all institutions to increase the level of vigilance to prevent Tunisia from becoming a crossing point to Libya for arms and Daech groups.

It says it is "totally confident" in the institutions of the army and security to preserve Tunisia's territorial sovereignty.

During his brief visit to Tunisia on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country supports Tunisia's initiative for peace in Libya.

Tunisia, he said at a joint press conference with President Kais Saied in Carthage, is a model of stability in the region and Turkey can take important steps with it on the Libyan issue.

Tunisian parties have expressed fears that the Turkish President's visit to Tunisia could pave the way for "alignment on the axes policy with regard to Libya".
