(TAP) - Illegal immigration attempts from Tunisia to the Italian coasts have decreased significantly, says the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (French: FTDS). 4 attempts were foiled in March 2020 against 25 attempts in February 2020 and 22 in January 2020.

The number of people arrested last March amounted to 137 against 571 in February and 316 in January 2020, the FTDS adds

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind the decrease of illegal immigration attempts from Tunisia to Italy, FTTDS Communication Head Romdhane Ben Amor told TAP Tuesday.

Tunisia's lockdown and curfew measures have helped reduce smugglers' activities, Ben Amor added.

He underlined that 34 immigrants reached, on Monday, Lampedusa, Italy including 11 women. Among them are two pregnant women. They were all quarantined at the Asylum Seeker Centre of Lampedusa.

Tunisia, he underlined, witnessed early this year, namely in January and February, a new wave of illegal immigration to Italy.

The number of illegal attempts of crossing the borders reached 22 in January 2020 and 25 in February 2020 against 8 attempts in January 2019 and 4 attempts only in February 2019.

273 illegal attempts were foiled in 2019 and 4,177 undocumented were arrested.
