(TAP) - The number of cases of violence against women in Tunisia has increased sevenfold during the period of general lockdown, Minister of Women, Family, Child and Elderly Asma Shiri, said on Saturday

During her participation by videoconference in a conference on "the increase of the phenomenon of violence in Arab societies at the time of the Coronavirus crisis," Shiri said that the Ministry of Women's Affairs had established a toll-free number 1899, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to report cases of violence against women.

She reported that her department had also set up another toll-free number (1809) to accompany children, who are forced to stay at home during the period of lockdown and to provide psychological support.

This is besides dedicating several hours in the media to experts in psychology to provide guidance for children as well as mothers, she added.

During the conference, which was attended by diplomats, men of culture and media professionals in the Arab world, Shiri stressed the role of civil society and associations active in the field of women, family, children and the elderly, which have supported the efforts of the Ministry to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on these groups.
