(TAP)- Deputy Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) in charge of Women, Youth and Associations Samir Cheffi said Sunday the labour union endorses a real women’s representativeness in the next cabinet. It will also seek to push for competence as a criteria to hold ministerial portfolios.

Gender equality in text and practice, particularly in the workplace, will be UGTT's priority in the next period, Cheffi told TAP in Béja on the fringes of a meeting held by the local section of the labour union on ILO Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190) and the organic law n° 2017-58 of August 11, 2017, on the elimination of violence against women.

Cheffi said the Tunisian legislation does not prohibit women from holding decision-making positions, denouncing the traditional mindset that deprives women of accessing senior positions despite their high competence.
