(TAP)- Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said during his meeting on Saturday with Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Secretary General Nourredine Taboubi that the government will be open to all proposals to "work together to get the country out of the critical situation it is in due to the coronavirus pandemic."

Mechichi stated that the government is banking on the optimal use of resources while endeavouring to confer more efficiency to public interventions and spending to stop the haemorrhage that the Tunisian economy is undergoing, adding that the government's approach is based on the search for a consensual formula of burden sharing pending an improvement in the citizen's socio-economic conditions.

The Prime Minister also commended the trade union's role in the achievement of balance in society in the economic and social sectors as well as in the political and cultural spheres, reads a press release issued by the Prime Ministry.

At the end of the meeting, Taboubi stated to the media that he had discussed with Mechichi the socio-economic issues and the challenges of the current stage, which require joint action and continuous coordination between the government and the UGTT.

He added that the meeting also focused on the issue of construction site workers, which he said "has lasted too long," the revision of the guaranteed minimum wage in addition to several sectoral issues.

The secretary general pointed out that Tunisia needs more dynamism to reboot the economy and enshrine the rational spirit and sense of responsibility, calling in this regard to join the efforts of all at this stage to save the country and meet the citizens' expectations.
