HIV: over 80 test positive between January and October 2022 (ATL MST SIDA Tunis)

(TAP)- Eighty-two people were diagnosed HIV-positive out of 900 tested between January and October, the Tunisian Association for the Fight against Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS Tunis (ATL MST Sida) said.

This includes 71 men who had sex with men, three had sex with men, 3 sex workers, 3 migrants and 5 others.

In 2021, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) identified 5,400 people living with HIV in Tunisia, including 5,200 aged 15 and over. 2,400 were women, 2,800 men and 200 children.

The prevalence rate stood at 0.1%. It was 0.5% among sex workers, 8.2% among men who had sex with men and reached 8.8% among injection drug users.

To improve access to early diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and viral hepatitis infections for target key and vulnerable populations, ATL MST SIDA is organising the third edition of the International Testing Week on November 21 to 28.

A workshop on the decentralisation of testing in different regions signalled the start of the International Week.

Topping the agenda are a press conference on community testing and its importance in response and fight against HIV/AIDS in Tunisia. A working session with the Health Minister about community testing and the purchase of tests and lubricant gel will be scheduled.

Awreness-raising events will be held in November and December in faculties, secondary schools, university hostels, youth centres and night clubs in Gammarth and Sousse.
