(TAP)- United States Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker said his first visit to Tunisia since taking office focused on ways to expand bilateral strategic partnership.

At his meeting with Interim President of the Republic Mohamed Ennaceur, Monday at Carthage Palace, the US Assistant Secretary was quoted as saying in a Presidency press release his visit to Tunisia comes at an exceptional moment in the country’s democratic transition, ahead of its presidential elections.

He added that the US Administration strongly believes in the success of Tunisia’s democratic experience, which he described as a role model in the region.

“Tunisia is an inspiration to the region in how it is pursuing and developing its democracy,” Schenker said in a statement after the meeting.

He emphasised the US commitment to support Tunisia to overcome its economic and security challenges saying “Tunisia is a great partner of the United States, an economic partner, a counter-terrorism partner and a security partner.”

The US official also commended Tunisia’s pluralism and freedom of expression.

Ennaceur stressed the strong bilateral cooperation, pointing out that Tunisia seeks to develop strategic partnership with the US so as to achieve development and stability in the country as well as in the region.

The Interim President expressed determination to provide all necessary conditions for the success of the presidential elections, while ensuring the neutrality of State institutions so as Tunisians would go massively to the polls and choose their representatives in an atmosphere of transparency and freedom.
