(TAP) - President Kais Saied chaired a meeting of the Army Supreme Council and Security Commands.

The meeting looked at the general situation in the country and, in particular, the security situation in southern Tunisia, said a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.

The Head of State warned against "the serious attempts by some to implode the State from within by undermining its institutions and seeking to evade one’s authority in several regions," the same source said.

"Among the existing threats," the President of the Republic noted, "is the attempt to engage the military institution in political conflicts, with the aim of pushing it into confrontation with itself and with the rest of the institutions.”

"The military and security institutions refrain from getting involved in political conflicts," Saied emphasised, adding that "what has happened in the last two days in the south is unacceptable in all respects.

The Head of State said he was convinced that "all Tunisians, among them the residents of Remada and Tataouine, are clear-sighted enough to be able to calm the situation and put the country's best interests above all other considerations.

Protests are legitimate as long as they are peaceful and stick to the respect of the law and the institutions," the President of the Republic pointed out.

He also said: "the current political situation requires us to live up to our historical responsibility and to preserve the State and its institutions, while being aware of the seriousness of the situation if discord breaks out".
