Tunisia willing to boost cooperation with COMESA member countries (Kais Saied)

(TAP) - President Kais Saied, who virtually addressed the 21st Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), affirmed Tunisia's willingness to boost its cooperation with COMESA member countries "in order to ensure real and sustainable development for African countries and guarantee prosperity and social peace for the continent's peoples."

Saied underlined the need to ensure the transfer of technology and knowledge to African countries and to build capacity in the field of modern technologies and the digital economy, "to achieve the transition to innovative and sustainable growth and to support the role of young Africans in the economic and social integration of our continent."

He also pointed out the need to build a green economy, through investment in renewable energy and by encouraging initiatives and projects in this sector, "which will help our countries cope with climate change."

"Tunisia is ready to conceive with the other African countries new cooperation approaches, expand inter-African trade and economic exchanges and create new investment formulas," the Head of State said.

Held under the theme: «Building Resilience Through Strategic Digital Economic Integration,» the summit aims to rally the 21 member states on how to safeguard and advance the COMESA regional integration agenda using digital platforms to facilitate doing business and enhance their resilience to face the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

COMESA (as defined by its Treaty) was established ‘as an organisation of free independent sovereign states which have agreed to co-operate in developing their natural and human resources for the good of all their people' and as such it has a wide-ranging series of objectives which necessarily include in its priorities the promotion of peace and security in the region.

With its 21 Member States, population of over 583 million a Gross Domestic Product of $805 billion, a global export/import trade in goods worth US$ 324 billion, COMESA forms a major market place for both internal and external trading.

Geographically, COMESA almost two thirds of the African Continent with an area of 12 Million (sq km).
