Tunis, Jan. 19 (TAP) - Temperatures are expected to be higher than normal in Tunisia during the period January-February-March 2025, according to the latest 'Seasonal Forecast Bulletin' published by the National Institute of Meteorology (INM).

Temperature trends for the first quarter of 2025 show that the most likely scenario for this period "indicates an overall warmer than normal season across the country".

As a reminder, the summer of 2024 was classified as the 4th hottest summer since 1950. That year, Tunisia experienced a hot season across the country, particularly in the south and south-west, according to the institute's 'climatic report for the summer season'.

November 2024 was also the hottest month recorded since 1950. The national average temperature reached 18.8°C, or 2.3°C above the reference average (16.5°C) calculated for the period 1991-2020, according to the INM's 'Monthly Climatological Bulletin'.

With regard to 'rainfall trends', the models show major discrepancies and do not propose a clear or consensual scenario for rainfall over the whole country for the period JAN-FEB-MAR 2025, according to the same source.

Nevertheless, Tunisia has made a promising start to 2025, thanks to abundant rainfall.

Minister of Agriculture, Water and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, told TAP in Kairouan on Saturday that “the recent rains have affected the various governorates, which have replenished the water table and collected large quantities of rain and run-off water”.

He added that “the level of dams is currently more than 30% full”.
