(TAP) – The development of the security and military situation on the borders and heights and the readiness of the different units were the focus of the meeting held Friday at the Carthage Palace between President Béji Caïd Essebsi and Minister of National Defence Abdelkrim Zbidi.

The meeting reviewed the results of recent field visits by the Minister of Defence to military institutions, the Presidency of the Republic said in a statement.

They include, particularly, the start of the construction of the Remada military base (Tataouine governorate) aimed at strengthening the intervention capabilities in the depths of the Sahara and supporting the war on terrorism, organised crime and smuggling.

This military base also aims to strengthen development efforts in the region, as it will be used by civil aviation and will help promote the different areas of economic and social life, said the same source.
