(TAP) - Oil production declined significantly from 8.6% to 9.48 million barrels, while that of natural gas fell from 12.8% to 1,202. 5 million m3, up to July 20, 2016, due to production stoppage for technical reasons, social movements or, natural regression of most fields, said Tuesday, the Ministry of Energy and Mining

It evoked in this respect, the stoppage of the production of gas fields "Chargui" in Kerkennah, from January 19 to April 6, 2016, and again from April 22 until now because of the protests of the unemployed of the region.

According to the latest statistics released by the Department of Energy and Mining, oil production will decline from 10% by the end of 2016, compared to the previous year. The production volume will reach 2.14 million tons of oil equivalent (TOE), against 2.37 million TOE in 2015.

The national resources of primary energy fell by 1.4% to reach by the end of June 2016, nearly 2.6 million TOE. However, the net increase of resources from the royalty on the Algerian gas (+ 140% to 0.38 million TOE) has mitigated this decline.

4% down in primary energy demand

Sign of economic stagnation, demand for primary energy fell 4% to nearly 4.5 million TOE in late June 2016 and the gas consumption fell of 6% in most sectors, with the exception of the production of electricity.

Demand for petroleum products has significantly decreased by 11% since the fuel was not used in the production of electricity in the first six months of 2016, unlike last year, in addition to Gasoil normal decline of sales and unleaded petrol.

According to the Department of Energy, the balance of primary energy registered a deficit of 1.85 million TOE at the end of June 2016, against a deficit of 1.98 million TOE during the same period last year, a 7% improvement. Regarding the rate of energy independence, it went from 57% in 2015 to 59% in 2016 (up to June).

29 permits of oil until July 20, 2016

The number of permits in effect reached 29 permits until July 20, 2016, including 28 exploration and prospecting permits after the end of the term of the exploration license "Mateur" (February 7, 2016), without the operator honouring its contractual commitments to work, and the permit "Fikirin" for its non transformation into a research permit.

The production of electricity reached until the end of June 2016, 8,660 gigawatt hours, 2% up compared with the same period of 2015. This production was based almost entirely on natural gas (97%, an increase of 13%). The Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) ensures 80% of production and the private sector for 20%.

The overall capacity of electricity production in Tunisia has reached 5224 megawatts in 2015, while production of electricity through renewable energy sources does not exceed 302 MW until the end of 2015, 6% of the production capacity.
